CHENNAI: Fresh Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu dropped below 1,000 for the first in 212 days on Tuesday while 12 deaths were recorded. The cumulative death toll rose to 12,092 and the case tally to 8,16,132 with 957 people testing positive.
Public health expert K Kolandaisamy said, “This indicates that we have definitely reached the declining phase but the vulnerable group and healthcare workers should still be careful as the virus might continue to spread. It might take another six months for cases to come to an end.”
Kolandaisamy said the initial idea was to delay the spread as much as possible and lockdown, early intervention and isolation of positive cases helped. Over the months, herd immunity too was achieved to an extent, he added. The daily count of fresh cases touched four digits for the first time on June 1. From then on, the virus spread was rampant and the 24-hour count peaked at 6,993 on July 27.
During the peak, the active case ratio was around 12% but it has come down to 1.1%. Also, an increase in recovery rate from 86% to 97.4% now has helped in pushing the doubling time to 528 days.
However, the mortality rate has declined only by 0.2 percentage points. With 12 more people succumbing to the disease on Tuesday, the Covid toll in the state increased to 12,092. The mortality rate is 1.5%.
Including the 1,065, who got discharged after treatment on Tuesday, so far 7,95,293 have recovered from Covid in TN.
