Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Live: Tamil Nadu added 604 new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, pushing the caseload to 27,41,617, the health department said. The fresh cases include five returnees from the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Andhra Pradesh. As many as eight people succumbed to the contagion in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 36,699, a medical bulletin said.
Recoveries eclipsed new infections with 695 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 26,97,939 leaving 6,979 active cases. Active infections in the State have been hovering over 7,000 over the last few weeks.
Meanwhile, hundreds of fishermen and women observed a fast in Rameswaram on Wednesday to protest against the arrest of 68 fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy and demanding their immediate release. The fishing community from here and nearby areas of Pamban and Mandapam held the hunger strike on the Rameswaram-Madurai national highway at Thangachimadam. About 10,000 fishermen would resort to rail roko at Thangachimadam on January 1, if Sri Lanka failed to release all the 68 Tamil Nadu fishermen and their boats.
An advocate of the Madras High Court was Tuesday suspended from practicing for alleged “improper” behaviour with a woman during the course of a virtual hearing. R D Santhana Krishnan, an advocate from Chennai, was prevented from practising as an advocate in all courts, tribunals and other authorities in India either in his name or in any assumed name till the disposal of the disciplinary proceedings pending against him for his alleged indecent behaviour, a press release from the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry said.
