Chennai: The skies in Chennai will remain partly cloudy on Sunday while moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur in some areas, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said in a forecast. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the state capital today are likely to settle around 29-30 degrees Celsius and 22-23 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The weather department has issued a thunderstorm and lightning warning for December 25 and December 26.

Day 1 (December 26): On Monday, while the maximum temperatures may be around 29-30 degrees Celsius the minimum temperature is likely to be around 22-23 degrees Celsius. The skies are likely to be partly cloudy and moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur in some areas.

Day 2 (December 27): On Tuesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 30 and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively while the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. The IMD has forecast light rain to occur in some areas.

Day 3 (December 28): On Wednesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain the same the previous day (30 and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively). The sky will remain partly cloudy and light rain is likely to occur in some areas.

Day 4and Day 5 (December 29 and 30): On Thursday and Friday, Chennai is likely to witness the maximum and minimum temperatures of 30-31degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively. The skies will remain partly cloudy and light rain is likely to occur in some areas.

“The Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved southwestwards with a speed of 05 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of 25 December over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast near latinade 9.0°N and longitude 82.2°E about 110 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 150 km east-southeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 330 km southeast of Nagappattinam (Tamil Nadu) and 500 km south-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu),” RMC Chennai said in a forecast issued at 8:45 am on Sunday.
“It is likely to move nearly southwestwards cross Sri Lanka coast around Trincomalee by noon of today, the 25 December. Thereafter, it would move west-southwestwards and emerge into Comorin Area and neighbourhood by tomorrow, the 26 December morning Under its influence, enhanced rainfall activity is likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during 25-26 December. Isolated heavy rain is also likely over coastal and south Tamilnadu during 25-26 December 2022,” it added.

Heavy rainfall warning for some parts of Tamil Nadu:

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Thoothukudi Ramanathapuram Sivaganga, Pudukkottai Thanjavur, Tiruvarur Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal area.

On December 26, Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthuas districts of Tamil Nadu, Karaikal areas.
