More rain likely in Tamil Nadu today

Chennai: After a long dry spell, Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed moderate rainfall on Saturday. The weather department has predicted more rain for the capital city and other areas for today.

As per the forecast by Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, “Moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal during next 1 to 3 hours.”

“Light to Moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ranipet, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Thirupattur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thiruchirappalli, Nilgiris and Thirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 1 to 3 hours.”

On Saturday, partly cloudy weather led to short light spells over many parts of the city. Till 7.30pm, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 4mm and 0.4mm as rain continued till late evening.

Earlier, IMD had said that many places in Tamil Nadu, especially the coastal regions would receive rainfall on December 25 and 26 after a new low-pressure area turns into depression over Bay of Bengal.

Under this influence, “Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over south coastal Tamil Nadu on 25th and 26th December 2022,” the weather department said. Kerala will also receive isolated rains on December 26.

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely to prevail till 25th December morning becoming 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph till 26th morning and decrease thereafter. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough till December 26 morning and IMD warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.
