Chennai News Highlights: Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi unfurled the Tricolour in Chennai on Thursday, on the occasion of India’s 74th Republic Day. The unfurling of the national flag was followed by the national anthem, while Indian Air Force helicopters showered flower petals. The Governor was welcomed by Chief Minister M K Stalin, who then introduced Ravi to the defence and police personnel.
In a surprising move, the DMK has decided not to boycott the Republic Day tea party to be hosted by Governor R N Ravi on Thursday unlike several of its allies who will not attend the event. Though the DMK-led government and Raj Bhavan have been at loggerheads in recent weeks, and days earlier all the parties in the ruling coalition had skipped the Pongal celebrations organised by the Governors, the ruling party has decided not to join the boycott announced by several of its allies, including the Congress, the CPI(M), the CPI, the VCK, and the MDMK.
In a relief to fishermen of Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Tuesday conditionally allowed Purse Seine Fishing beyond the territorial waters of the state but within the exclusive economic zone. Purse Seine Fishing involves a method where a vertical net attached to a vessel is targeted at dense schools of fish in open water in curtain formation the bottom of which is drawn together to enclose the fish.
