Chennai: The Madras high court has ordered toll-free numbers to be made available across TN to help alert and rescue the abandoned differently-abled people in the state.
The first bench of Acting Chief Justice T Raja and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy issued a direction to this effect on Monday, when a public interest petition seeking a direction to the government to create rescue homes and centres in all districts in Tamil Nadu came up for hearing.
The PIL by advocate K Venkatesan said scores of disabled people had been rendered homeless and without medical treatment, and the state social welfare department remained cold to representations and suggestions submitted since September 2021. The request sought creation of centres across the state to house these persons and provide them with medication and basic hygiene.
In response, government pleader G P Muthukumar filed a report sent by the Commissionerate for Welfare of the Differently Abled explaining the schemes such as rehabilitation homes, rescue scheme and halfway homes, available in TN.
