MADURAI: The Madras high court has dismissed a batch of petitions filed by chairpersons of various panchayats who challenged Madurai district collector’s order calling for tenders to desilt waterbodies.
The court observed that these petitions were a direct attempt to scuttle and put an end to the scheme initiated by the collector for the welfare of the people.
The petitioners had challenged the order on the ground that it was the exclusive right of the panchayat to frame schemes, based on resolutions passed by the panchayats.
The petitioners stated that the collector’s order was a direct encroachment on the power and financial status of the panchayats.
Hearing the plea, Justice C V Karthikeyan observed that the panchayat chairpersons, who have been elected to do public good, would be expected to join hands with the officials in execution of such work and not to obstruct it.
Observing that this court could not be used to prevent a laudable object being implemented for public welfare, the judge dismissed the petitions.
